This is a calendar made by the A.B.L.E. (Allied Blacks for Liberty and Equality) Club. Established in 1995, ABLE was a group founded to create awareness for the Black community and issues needing to be addressed on campus. This calendar serves the purpose of any other. But what I found interesting was that ABLE created its own calendar in the first place, as this is not something I would see them doing in the modern age (though there are numerous reasons for this). As well as the beautiful black-and-white paintings and drawings by various Black artists, which includes a quote by Black poets, singers, and writers. There is also a handy bibliography in the back that helps credit said artists. This is admirable because they could have used the regular Knox calendars like everyone else. But I found their choice to make a Black-centered calendar quite unique and innovative, not to mention gorgeous. This uplifts Black Art, important in the Black Arts movement Documenting aspects and events of your community only helps strengthen it. It provides a sense of unity and power. I would have wanted one of these calendars to show my support for ABLE and the Black community. And anyone could have, which, again, would strengthen and spread support for ABLE and its work. Unfortunately, I wasn’t even a twinkle in my mother’s eye at the time.
What a great find, Charlene. There seems to be a problem with the image you posted, though. Can you try to fix this? It would be great for others to be able to see it!
Hiiii, should be fixed now (:
