The Umoja Theater Ensemble was a theater troupe founded at Knox that focused on self-determination, presumably mostly focused on Black issues. This is almost like a microcosm of the Black Arts movement 20 years later, showing a focus on independence and putting on one of the most famous Black Arts theater productions.

  1. What a find, Guy. You’re exactly right. The choice of Ntozake’s play to be the first production of the Umoja Theater Ensemble reflects the Black Arts the ethos (and the stated ethos of the ensemble) of self-determination and unity.
