This archival research project has been the coolest thing I’ve done at Knox. It was so unbelievably fascinating to see what Knox was like 50-60 years ago. I especially liked learning about campus events. The flunk day photos are a personal fave. I think it’s really cool to have an event like that for such a long time. Then when you look back on the past, you can see how much has changed and what hasn’t. I know that the enjoyment of the students hasn’t changed and probably won’t. It was really fun to dig up old things and it was cool to see the connections between the archives and things we were reading/learning about in class. The connection of the readings of Amiri Baraka’s work and the Racial Crisis Symposium of 1969 was the most interesting thing I found while researching. To find that he was inviting and expected to come to Knox to speak was exciting. I would definitely go back to the archives just for fun to explore the collections they have. I really appreciate the opportunity to have this kind of lab for the class. It was a nice way to break up what we were doing and talking about. I also really like hands-on learning so to be able to sift through files and discover things is what made the learning so fun. I’d definitely recommend other students to be curious about the archives and experience that really cool resource.
