We spent a few minutes observing Clementine Hunter’s quilt. I saw flowers (perhaps red tulips) and buildings, likely houses. I believe Joseph mentioned the Africa House as well, but I didn’t catch the context.

On the back of the quilt, you can see various bags and sacks used to create it, which were pieces of history in themsleves. It gave the quilt an odd texture that made it a bit stiffer than most quilts that come to mind. We were told Hunter liked to use whatever was around to create her work. A resourceful, recycling artist. Those are the best kind.

Above is a corner of the quilt where a house is pictured, the architecture is rural and traditional. It reminded me of Haitian art that I could find on my great-aunt’s wall. The palette is simple in that there are only a few colors used and there is a little variation of the same colors, but this helps them pop even more. The architecture makes me think this could’ve been any church, schoolhouse, or home in Gonaïves, Haiti.
